Wiffle Ball in Wake Forest

Did You Grow Up Playing Wiffle Ball?

Do you remember growing up playing baseball?  Maybe you played in the yard with your dad.  Maybe you played in local field with your buds.  I grew up playing whatever sport was in season and on TV.  During the NFL season all we wanted to do was throw deep bombs with my buds.  During hockey season we would shovel the ice on the pond and skate like Bobby Orr (or so we thought).  But it was during the spring and long beautiful summer days of our youth that we grabbed whatever we could find…a broom stick and a tennis ball, a baseball bat and gloves, or our preferred Wiffle Ball bats all taped up with electrical tape to make them a mean (heavy) heavy machine!  With that wiffle ball we could throw every pitch you could imagine.  We would keep a score book and even make player announcements!  We were the heroes of the 80’s!  Clemens versus Rickey Henderson was one I remember well!  Every kid knew the batting stance of every player.  Rickey, Brett, Carew, Kingman, Remy, Murphy, Reggie, Franco, Boggs, Gibson, Canseco, McGwire, Gwynn, etc.  You know you remember these and that video link above brings back memories.

Today, here in Wake Forest NC I love that my kids enjoy the game as much as I did.  We play a variety of wiffle ball games together.  I love being all time pitcher.  Nothing better than ringing up your 6 year old with a nasty breaking ball!  Lol   One of the requirements we had when searching for a home was a yard big enough to “hold” a wiffle ball field.  Yep, we have a great one.  If you hit it to the trees you get an automatic “dinger”.  We may not have a garage but there is no better wiffle ball field in Wake Forest.  As my kids enter that age to have friends over I am sincerely hopeful that they will choose to play outside on the diamond rather than inside on the tv.  We spent endless hours playing ball outside (although we did play our fair share of Techmo Bowl) and went through dozens of wiffle balls every summer.

As I drive through Heritage subdivision and Dansforth and St. Ives and Cimarron and visit the local Wake Forest parks I am seeing more and more kids getting outside.  They are out on skateboards and tossing a football around.  But recently I have seen 3 wiffle ball games going on.  This warms my heart and is a true indication that Major League Baseball opening day is only a week away!  My old wiffle ball buddys I know remember those days as well as I do…right Chad, Chucky, Scotty, Billy, Dexter, Kyle etc….?

One last thought…when my kids are outside I love listening for the one saying that has been said in America for over a century …. “Ah come on, that was a strike!”
