Tips for hiring the right REALTOR


A new client asked an all too familiar question this week;  “There are just so many agents calling, how do I know which one to pick?”  My response was simple and is the same for anyone who asks me that question;  “Go with the one YOU feel comfortable with and trust.”

Hiring the “right” agent looks differently to everyone.  Buying or selling your home is a huge financial decision.  It can be difficult to keep emotions at bay and treat the process as the business transaction that it is.  That is where the benefits of working with the right professional come into play.  Although the right agent looks different from client to client, there are a few key areas you should research when making this decision.  Let’s go over a few now.

  • Experience  It’s important to ask about the agent’s experience.  Ask them about the number of transactions they have assisted with.  Number of transactions offers far more valuable experience than number of years in the business.  With that being said, don’t discount that new agent simply because they are new.  If all other factors indicate the agent is the one for you, trust your instinct.
  • Communication  How does the agent primarily communicate with clients?  Who will be your main point of contact? How often can you expect to hear from them?  It’s important to work with an agent who is comfortable utilizing the method of communication that works best for you.
  • Designations  In the state of N.C., all brokers are required to pass a state exam and to complete continuing education classes each year.  The real estate industry is one that is rapidly changing; it’s important to work with someone who puts in the effort to stay on top of these things.  Has the agent taken any additional, unrequired educational courses? Are they accredited in any areas of specialty?  Some examples include:
    • ABR, Accredited Buyer’s Representative
    • CRS, Certified Residential Specialist
    • GRI, Graduate, Real Estate Institute
    • SRS, Seller Representative Specialist
  • Testimonials    Is the agent able to provide testimonials from previous clients?  Do you know anyone who has worked with this agent?  Just like countless other professions, word of mouth referrals and testimonials can go a long in way establishing credibility for a REALTOR.

At the end of the day, choosing the right agent is a matter of personal preference.  With so many factors to consider, it is my opinion that the most important one is your instinct. By the time you reach the settlement table, you will have spent many hours with your agent & they will have knowledge of many aspects of your life, including your finances.  You must feel comfortable and confident in the agent you select to represent you.  The ideal person is a professional who is knowledgeable about the market, ethical, has the ability to answer your question and address your concerns and will be your teammate throughout the entire process.  Take your time.  Do your research.  Talk to many and choose the agent who will work for you.
