I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream! Isn’t that how the old saying goes? Who doesn’t love ice cream? I’d eat it for breakfast if it was socially acceptable, especially on those super-hot July and August mornings. Ice cream always signifies summer to me, I remember getting a creamee (soft serve) with extra chocolate jimmies (or sprinkles if you’re not from the north!) and racing to eat it before the ice cream dripped all over your hand or melted through the traditional wafer cone . As a kid you always wanted that cone and fought my parents on the cup that they made me carry but always ended up using. Guess mom and dad always were right…
Anyway, since it’s that time of year where families and groups of friends love to go out and get ice cream so I figured a comprehensive list of places in Wake Forest would be beneficial for the upcoming summer months.
Location: 306 East Wait Avenue, Wake Forest, NC 27587
Conveniently located within walking distance of downtown Wake Forest this local ice cream shop will have you coming back often to try delicious flavors made with locally sourced all-natural ingredients.
Flavors range from the traditional Chocolate, vanilla and Strawberry to Southern favorites such as Bernie’s Butter Pecan, Georgie’s Fuzzy Peach Dream or Bennie’s Bacon and Bourbon. Then there is my personal favorite Madd Mac’s Mint chip.
This place does not disappoint and also provides seating inside for those unbearable hot and humid days!
Location: 3433 Rogers Road, Wake Forest, NC 27587
Located off of Rogers Road near the Heritage subdivision in Wake Forest. This place is like a tradition ice cream stand found up north for all of you who have relocated here from New England. If soft-serve ice cream is your ice cream of choice than Wake Forest Dairy Depot is the place for you!
Dairy Depot has chocolate and vanilla soft-serve but can also combine either of those flavors with the many other soft serve flavors they carry. These are some of my favorite combinations:
Chocolate & Mint
Watermelon & Vanilla
Coconut & Mango
Blueberry & Strawberry
The combinations are endless!
Dairy Depot also makes amazing Sundae’s with lots of toppings to choose from! And if the Sonic Blizzards are your thing be sure to check out their Train Wrecks!
Location: 11736 Retail Dr., Wake Forest, NC 27587
This location is perfectly located off of 98 and the Wakefield subdivision and is an easy stop for those folks who just enjoyed dinner at one of the many restaurants located nearby.
Goodberry’s Frozen Custard is churned with their original all natural recipe: “Milk, Cream, Egg, Pure Cane Sugar, Honey, and Natural Vanilla Extract.” Doesn’t get much simpler than that but my goodness it’s delicious! What’s even better is they control the amount of air in the custard which results in a super smooth and creamy texture.
Every day you can expect chocolate, vanilla, no sugar added vanilla and their flavor of the day! The flavor of the day can be found online. They also have many candy, fruit and nut options to blend into your favorite flavor. You really can’t go wrong with anything on the menu!
My only suggestion, the custard tends to melt a little faster than traditional ice cream therefore eat fast but slow enough to avoid the brain freeze!
Location: 703 N Main St, Wake Forest, NC 27587
Perfectly located near the historic district off of North Main Street in Wake Forest.
Although not ice cream this place is still worth a mention for those folks who want something cool but don’t want something as heavy as ice cream or that simply cannot do dairy.
Pelican’s serves up freshly shaved snow with your choice of over 100 flavors! Be simple and choose one flavor or be bold and daring and try multiple flavors together! Oh and if you try the dill pickle flavor you need to report back to us on your thoughts! Is it like drinking pickle juice?
So there you have it folks, a quick break down of ice cream spots in Wake Forest. Yes there are a few national chains in Wake Forest which I did not mention which are equally as good but most people know about them and I wanted to bring places in Wake Forest to your attention that you may not be aware of. Hope you enjoy!
