TOP 6 Ice Cream Places in Wake Forest

Ice Cream PictureI scream, you scream… We ALL scream for ice cream!! This is the time of the year that we love to surprise our kids and spontaneously go out for ice cream. Of course, every day of the year is a great day for ice cream at our house! As Wake Forest has grown, so too have our choices of local ice cream shops. Two places that stand out on our list of favorites because they source local ingredients and are made fresh on-site are Lumpy’s and Goodberrys! There are lots of options when it comes to ice cream shops in Wake Forest, see the list at the end of the article – these two stand out for the quality ingredients they use.

Lumpy's Picture1. Lumpy’s – Owned and operated by Buck Buchanan, Lumpy’s has been growing in popularity since he made his first batch back in 2001. What started out as a hobby turned has turned into a full-time operation. With the help of the NC Department of Agriculture program ‘Goodness Growns,’ Buck received the business support he needed to turn his hobby into a reality. Lumpy’s is known for their all-natural ice cream made from fresh locally sourced ingredients. They use hormone-free milk and cream, which are central to each perfect pint, that comes from family farms within 30 miles of their production table which they call ‘The Lumpy’s Lab’. They combine that milk and cream with sugar or honey for a simple, made-from-scratch ice cream base that contains no artificial colorings, flavors, or corn syrup. Since it is made fresh, not all flavors are always available. They always have a variety of fun and very unique flavors including Bernie’s Bacon Burbon, Wally’s Banana Walnut and Georgie’s Fuzzy Peach Dream. You can even find Lumpy’s in local grocery stores and events around town. Southern Seasons has their pints in their freezer isle and also in their scoop shop. You can also find them at Whole Foods in Cary and Winston Salem and NOFO Food Market. Lumpy’s is located in downtown Wake Forest at 306 East Wait Avenue.

Goodberry's Picture2. Goodberry’s Frozen Custard – Okay, this isn’t technically ‘ice cream’ but it sure is close to it. The addition of egg in the recipe moves it into the custard category. This locally owned chain with 9 locations through the Triangle makes the custard fresh daily – hourly, in fact — right in the store before your eyes! Goodberry’s was created by the Brathwaite family which opened the first shop in north Raleigh in 1988.Their ingredients are simple. Vanilla custard consists of Milk, Cream, Egg, Pure Vanilla Can Sugar, Honey and Natural Vanilla Extract. Vanilla, Chocolate and No-Sugar Added Vanilla are always on the menu along with one featured daily flavor. Some of the featured flavors have been Blackberry, Salted Caramel and Jamocha which is a huge hit. Now depending on what you decide to top your custard with the ‘healthy factor’ becomes another story! They offer all the typical toppings nuts, chocolate chips, heath bar, fresh fruits – just to name a few. There are several custom sundaes offered as well as “Carolina Concretes” which is their version of the treat mixed up with toppings. They claim to be able to make over a billon flavor combinations! They provide a monthly calendar so you can plan when to hit Goodberry’s for your favorite flavor. Here is a link to this month’s calendar http://www.goodberrys.com/flavor-of-the-day/. They are located at 11736 Retail Drive in Wake Forest, NC.
