Wake Forest Among Safest Cities in North Carolina

On my daily drives through Wake Forest, I always see a Wake Forest Police Car driving by or pass by one on the street. Always. It brings a sense of security knowing that they are on the streets and active in the community. Perhaps this is why I am not surprised to hear that Wake Forest was named one of the safest cities in North Carolina, according to a study conducted by ValuePenguin, a financial education website based in New York City.

Wake Forest ranked 6th among cities with populations higher than 25,000. Across the state, the town ranked 25th overall.

Just how does our Wake Forest Police Chief feel about the report? “We are extremely pleased to learn of the ValuePenguin findings,” said Wake Forest Police Chief Jeff Leonard. “One of the primary objectives of our strategic plan is to enhance the sense of safety in Wake Forest. Our high ranking suggests our residents have good reason to feel safe. That’s a testament to not only our policing efforts but also to the cooperation of our residents and their commitment to a safe community.”

The ranking is based on data collected from the 2014 FBI crime statistics by city, which provides the most recent crime data available. The raw data report included property crimes which include burglary, larceny-theft, motor vehicle theft, and arson. It also included violent crimes which are murder/manslaughter, forcible rape, robbery, and aggravated assault. The crime information was drawn from law enforcement agencies that take part in the FBI Uniform Crime Reporting program.

There are several other Wake County cities that made the top 50 list:

  • Holly Springs ranked 3rd
  • Apex ranked 6th
  • Cary ranked 8th
  • Morrisville ranked 17th
  • Wendell 20th
  • Knightdale ranked 35th
